STUDY ON THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF CREATIVE SECTORS IN BISCAY/ SPAIN

SUMMARY

In April 2008 KEA European Affairs completed a three-month study on the economic potential of the creative sectors in the region of Biscay/ Spain, home of the famous Guggenheim museum. The aim of the study was to analyse for the first time the creative sectors’ economic growth potential in the region and to suggest ways forward with regards to their development. It was commissioned by the Bilbao Chamber of Commerce.

KEA completed this study at a time when creative industries and culture are increasingly recognised as decisive factors in local and regional social and economic development by policy makers across Europe. As part of the assignment several comparable European regions and cities were reviewed regarding best-practices. KEA also conducted a fact finding mission to Bilbao and held a stakeholder workshop to ensure that recommendations matched real local development needs.
